For most unused or expired medicines, FDA recommends a take-back location or prepaid mail-back option. Find an authorized collection location and confirm what it accepts before making the trip.

The DEA locator identifies authorized collection locations. Search near your address, then contact the location about its hours and accepted items. A listing is a starting point; confirm the details before travelling.
A pharmacy’s ability to dispense a medicine does not establish that it accepts unused medicines for disposal. Ask first.

The FDA describes mail-back options alongside collection locations. Review the program’s instructions for accepted medicines, packaging and how to use its mailer.

- Is the collection service operating, and during which hours?
- Does it accept the type of item I have, such as tablets, liquids or an inhaler?
- Are there packaging, quantity or other instructions to follow?
- If this item is not accepted, where can I find the appropriate guidance?
